Ricoeur’s circular thesis concerning time, narrative is linked with temporality in the same sense that language configures and refigures all temporal experiences as measurable by a herrenuhren. What Ricoeur calls “historical time” is the way in which historians treat time. Historical time is unique in that it mediates between objective and subjective time. Reinhart Koselleck examined the development of this attitude towards time. Koselleck argued that “historical time” denotes an awareness of human beings that the historical process is continually evolving, an awareness that originated in the eighteenth century when a new perspective on the malleability of the future led to a re-interpretation of the past.
