All LED bulbs are listed by their base type and size. With an MR16 LED, the “MR” stands for Multifaceted reflector. “16” refers to the diameter of 16 eights (or 2 inches) on the MR16 LED. The MR format was first innovated to be used in slide projectors but its applications have since widely expanded. In the past, MR16 was one of the most common formats for halogen bulbs to be used in track lights, recessed ceiling lights, table lamps, pendants lights, landscaping lights, and much more. Because MR16 halogen bulbs were so popular, the MR16 LED bulb is now also becoming very popular. You don’t have to do anything special to switch from the MR16 halogens to MR16 LED bulbs. Just buy the MR16 LED bulbs and put them in as you would have the halogen.

There are some differences with MR16 LED bulbs and halogens though – and not just the energy-saving capabilities for which LED bulbs are known. A MR16 LED bulb will not usually have as wide of a beam angle as halogens. Instead of getting a wide area of lighting, you get a targeted area of light. This makes them better suited for spotlights instead of table lamps.
